Policy - Dutch Elm Disease

INTENT:
The intent of this policy is to promote the management and destruction of dutch elm diseased trees in the Town of Churchbridge, by providing an outline of what and how to obtain samples for testing and preventive measures to keep elm trees healthy.

OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this policy is to sustain the elm trees in the Town of Churchbridge.

WHAT AND HOW:
1. Once the disease is sighted, a sample should be taken and submitted according to directions and submitted to Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization, Crop Protection Lab at 346 McDonald Street, Regina, SK S4N 6P6 for detection of the disease.

2. If the sample proves to be positive, the Town will have SaskPower cut down as much of the tree as possible, and remove the tree to ground level, take it to the landfill immediately for burning and treat the stump with 16 parts diesel and 1 part 2-4-D.

TAKING A SAMPLE:
From a twig showing brown staining, cut three sections, each about as big around as your finger and four (4) inches long. Do Not Remove the Bark.

Before sampling another tree - clean cutting tools with alcohol to avoid spreading the disease.

Wrap the samples in wax paper and put in an envelope or box and mail.

Include your name, address, phone number and where the sample was collected - be as specific as possible - if the results are positive, the tree will have to be located.

PREVENTION:
Prevention starts by keeping elm trees healthy and properly pruned. However, regulations prohibit pruning from April 13th to August 31st - since fresh wounds attract beatles.

Council may at its discretion, alter the intent of this policy upon proper application to its body.
